What to do After an Earthquake
Posted on: January 22, 2016 by Aegis General
While no one wants to experience such events, earthquakes are common occurrences throughout the United States. Particularly on the West Coast, these disasters can cause enormous amounts of damage to homes and businesses. Therefore, an Earthquake Insurance Program is strongly advised. After an earthquake, follow these steps to ensure a safe and speedy recovery.
Check for Injuries
Ensure family members are secure and did not suffer any serious injury. If so, they should seek medical attention immediately. However, do not attempt to move seriously injured persons unless they are in danger of further injury, says Central United States Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC). If possible, check on neighbors. An emergency plan should be followed to ensure the safety of all family members, as well.
Check for Damage
When searching the home for damage, wear shoes at all times to prevent injuries from glass, broken items, or harmful materials. If inside, determine if the structure of the building is compromised in any way. If so, evacuate loved ones until a detailed inspection can be completed. Remember not to touch any power lines and refrain from using landlines until they have been inspected for safety.
More Safety Concerns
Circulate the home to identify any gas leaks. However, never use a candle or match in the home after an earthquake. If any medicines or harmful chemicals have been spilled, clean them up as soon as possible. Next, try to avoid flushing toilets soon after as sewer lines could be backed up. Further, be prepared for additional aftershocks as these can permeate more damage within the home. Lastly, do not eat any foods that have been exposed to the elements as they may have glass or debris inside the packaging.
