Secure your Home: Preparing for an Earthquake
Posted on: February 19, 2016 by Aegis General
Especially for those who live on the West Coast, homeowners can never be too careful when preparing for an earthquake. As we have discussed in a previous post, the aftermath of such disasters can be devastating. However, when properly prepared with a comprehensive Earthquake Insurance Policy and by taking safety precautions, these effects can be dramatically reduced. Here are some considerations to make to secure the home and its belongings before an earthquake.
Homeowners need to evaluate their homes and identify the biggest risk factors that would either cause damage or become damaged during the erratic movement of an earthquake. While most people think to secure their large TVs and electronics first, large, heavy items like entertainment centers and bookshelves should also be secured. If they fall over, massive damage and even injury can result.
Move furniture away from beds, sofas, or other places where people sit, sleep or spend a lot of time and move heavy objects to lower shelves, says Earthquake Country Alliance. In addition, do not put unstable objects in close proximity to doors or exits as this can be a serious safety hazard during an earthquake-the last thing someone would want is to be trapped in a room after the disaster struck. Even bulky items like water heaters should be strapped to the walls to ensure they don’t roll around.
Next, appliances should be secured to wall studs and wall art should be hung with closed hooks to prevent them falling off. Further, consider using latches to secure kitchen cabinets, as well.
According to a University of California, Los Angeles study, 55% of the injuries during the 1994 Northridge earthquake were caused by falling furniture or objects and only one percent of injuries were caused by building damage. Therefore, these simple prevention practices can help reduce injury significantly and even save a life.
By securing the home’s contents, homeowners can immensely reduce their risk of damage or claims.
