Motorcycle Safety: 5 Essential Tips
Posted on: March 8, 2016 by Aegis General
Riding a motorcycle is both fun and fuel efficient. However, it may come as no surprise to learn that motorcycle riders are 30 times more likely to die in a crash than someone in a car, says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Especially for riders over the age of 60, they are three times more likely to suffer serious injury after a crash as opposed to their younger counterparts. Therefore, it’s important to understand the safety risks involved with owning and riding a motorcycle. However, many riders enjoy their motorcycles without any injuries. The best way to reduce Motorcycle Liability and avoid injury is to be prepared. With that said, here are some safety recommendations to dramatically reduce the odds of accidents on a motorcycle.
Buy a Manageable Bike
Purchase a bike that’s comfortable and manageable. Even those who have experience riding will find that today’s bikes, regardless of the engine type, are noticeably more powerful than previous models. Make sure the fit, the handlebars, the seat, and the controls are all comfortable and beginners should always start with a smaller bike (250-300cc engine.)
Wear a Helmet
While many riders don’t enjoy them, helmets are absolutely critical for protection. It’s been proven to dramatically reduce the odds of injury for motorcycle accidents, especially when worn along with regular protective riding gear.
Watch for Hazards
Naturally, bikes have less contact with the road than a car. Therefore, any debris on the road can cause motorcycles to slide. Be wary of railroad tracks, fallen leaves, potholes, etc. to avoid having an accident. Keep in mind that on a motorcycle, these small things can be huge threats.
Ride Defensively
Especially since it’s more difficult to see motorcyclists, it’s crucial that they ride defensively. Don’t tailgate, watch for swerving vehicles, keep an eye out for erratic behavior that might indicate another driver is under the influence or texting, and don’t speed. Lastly, invest in anti-lock brakes-these are arguably the best life-saving feature on a bike.
Avoid Inclement Weather
Not only do rain and snow reduce visibility, but they create a larger margin for error due to slippery road conditions. Be sure to steer carefully and be gentle of the brakes and throttle.
These tips can reduce the risk of injury on a bike and ensure riders are adequately prepared and protected. At Aegis General Insurance Agency, we offer specialty insurance coverage for motorcycles.
