Earthquake Recovery Steps
Posted on: October 21, 2016 by Aegis General
- In the following days and weeks after an earthquake, everything is chaotic. Once all family members are taken care of and urgent matters are addressed, it’s time to start taking steps to recover. In addition to securing the financial assistance necessary with an Earthquake Insurance Program, consider the following advice to recover from an earthquake.
According to Earthquake Country Alliance, use the information put together in the disaster plan and the supplies organized in the disaster kits. Until you are sure there are no gas leaks, do not re-enter the home. Also, do not use open flames (lighters, matches, candles, or grills) or operate any electrical or mechanical device that can create a spark (light switches, generators, motor vehicles, etc.). Further, homeowners should identify any cracks in the foundation, chemical spills, or gas leaks. Don’t forget to document any findings in order to make the claims process run smoothly.
Tune in to local radio stations for information on emergency shelters, first aid advice, and finding further financial assistance. Contact loved ones and notify them of the status of the family and everyone’s health.
If the power is off, use refrigerated meals first as they will spoil more quickly. If the water is turned off due to the aftermath of the earthquake, drink from melted ice cubes and water bottles. Never drink from pools, spas, or other contaminated sources! Lastly, be mindful of large cracks in the road, shattered glass, and any other safety hazards until cleanup is complete.
