Motorcycle Insurance: Most Common Misconceptions
Posted on: August 3, 2015 by Aegis General
Earlier this year, we explored the challenge of securing complete and affordable motorcycle insurance, stating that these vehicles are typically harder to insure than their four wheeled counterparts due to the higher risks they pose to their riders. As a provider of motorcycle insurance, you of course want to craft the perfect policy for your insureds, assuring that the policy fits their needs.
Developing the right policy for your clients includes making sure they understand what their insurance coverage entails, and clearing up any misconceptions they may have about motorcycle insurance. Below are a few of the most common myths.
Myth #1: “I only need the minimum coverage required in my state.”
Many motorcyclists mistakenly believe that if they crash, they won’t cause much damage, as a motorcycle is so much smaller than a car. Even if a motorcyclist’s collision doesn’t cause a lot of damage to their motorcycle or the car or object it struck, a motorcyclist could still inadvertently cause a chain-reaction accident that causes a tremendous amount of damage.
Myth #2: “My insurance rates will go up if I get a speeding ticket.”
This is not necessarily true in all cases. Typically, a motorcyclist’s first minor speeding ticket will not affect their insurance rates. That being said, it’s still important to be a safe driver, and remember that an accumulation of speeding tickets could certainly cause an increase in insurance rates.
Myth #3: “If I loan out my motorcycle to a friend, his/her insurance policy will cover it if they’re involved in an accident.”
Depending on which state you reside in this may not be the case; your insurance company may be liable for the damage done to your bike in an accident, as well as whatever other damages the collision caused. As such, your insurance rates may increase even though you yourself were not involved in the accident.
The above mentioned factors are just a few of the common myths motorcyclists have about their insurance coverage. At Aegis General, we understand the risk motorcyclists face and are specialize in helping protect against them. We write coverage for motorcyclists of every age and every style, offering insureds a choice when it comes to their motorcycle insurance.
